The Love Of NFL

Oh NFL, How We Love Thee

Posted by Tough Love inMad Love on Friday, October 03, 2008

Most of you don’t know this, but today should be a National Holiday! In fact, call the office and tell them you’re taking a three-day weekend, because you need the extra time to honor the first NFL game ever played.

On a glorious October 3 back in 1920, the Dayton Triangles and Rock Island Independents emerged victorious in the first games featuring NFL clubs (at the time the NFL was known as the American Pro Football Association).

The Triangles shutout the Columbus Panhandles 14-0, while the Independents annihilated the Muncie Flyers 45-0. It would be the only game the Flyers ever played.

The Triangles finished the season 5-2-2, while the Independents were 6-2-2. The Panhandles were second to last in the league, thanks goodness for those Flyers, with a 2-6-2 record. The Akron Pros won the championship with an 8-0-3 record, and a ridiculous 151-7 scoring margin.

So today, we at The Love of NFL are serving up a king size serving of OLD SCHOOL LOVE for this day in NFL history!
